FM27 wonderkid goalkeepers

Goalkeepers are the cheapest wonderkids in FM27 and the easiest to develop, because they play every week once they are good enough and their attributes improve on a predictable curve. The list below is every keeper in the database with a potential score of 82 or higher, sorted by ceiling.

Player Age Club Nation Potential
Rui Araki 18 G-Osaka Japan 91
Dennis Seimen 20 VfB Stuttgart Germany 90
Alessandro Nunziante 19 Udinese Italy 87
Quenten Attigah 17 AZ Netherlands 87
Mike Penders 20 Chelsea Belgium 86
Tommaso Martinelli 20 Fiorentina Italy 85
Pierce Charles 20 Man City Northern Ireland 85
Kerem Matışlı 19 Bursaspor Türkiye 85
Otávio 20 Cruzeiro Brazil 84
Florian Hellstern 18 VfB Stuttgart Germany 84
João Pedro 18 Santos Brazil 83
Dani Martín 20 Levante Spain 82
Christian Zawieschitzky 19 RB Salzburg Austria 82

The three who are ready now

Rui Araki is the best value goalkeeper in the game. He is 18, at a Japanese club, on a wage of around £360 a week, and his ceiling is 91. He will not be ready for a Premier League first team in season one, but he will be ready by season three, and the fee will be a fraction of what a European club would ask.

Dennis Seimen is the most complete of the group. A 90 ceiling at 20, at Stuttgart, with the size and distribution to play behind a high line. He is also the most expensive, because everyone knows.

Alessandro Nunziante is the compromise: 87 potential, 19 years old, Serie A experience in the squad, and a fee that a mid-table club can structure.

Shot-stopping or distribution

The engine separates the two jobs more clearly than it used to, and the effectiveness model makes the difference visible.

Shot-stopping keepers rely on reflexes, positioning and handling. They suit a deep block, where the keeper faces more shots from range and fewer through balls.

Distribution keepers rely on kicking, throwing, composure and command of area. They suit a high line, where the keeper is a passer and a sweeper.

If your tactic is a low block, buy the shot-stopper. If it is a high press, buy the distributor. A goalkeeper who is excellent at the wrong job will still concede goals that look like his fault.

Check the sweeper-keeper role before you buy

A goalkeeper with 11 acceleration and 10 composure cannot play as a sweeper keeper, whatever his shot-stopping says. The role is a different job, not a label.

The development path

A young goalkeeper needs three things, in this order.

  1. Minutes. Loan him to a club where he will start. A season in the Championship is worth more than three years as a backup.
  2. A mentor. A senior keeper with a professional personality and a similar style speeds up the mental attributes.
  3. Training focus. One-on-one sessions on the weakest of the three key areas: handling, distribution or command of area.

Goalkeepers develop later than outfield players. A 20-year-old with 87 potential will not be a starter at a title-winning club until 23 or 24. Plan the squad around that.

Who to avoid

The backup at a big club. Pierce Charles at Man City is a fine prospect, but he will not play. You are buying potential that has no route to minutes.

The 20-year-old with no first-team football. If a keeper has not played a senior match by 20, his development has already lost a year. Check appearance history before the fee.

The small keeper. Height is not everything, but the engine models reach. A 180cm keeper with good reflexes can be excellent in a low block and vulnerable to crosses.

Cheap alternatives

If the fees above are out of reach, the cheap wonderkids page filters the same pool by wage and league. The goalkeeping bargains are almost always outside the big five leagues: Japan, the Netherlands, Portugal, Brazil and Austria.

The other route is the senior free agent market. A 38-year-old keeper on a free transfer is not a long-term plan, but he is a cheap bridge while the wonderkid develops. The free agent list has the names.

How goalkeepers fit the tactic

The goalkeeper is the first passer in a possession side and the last defender in a low block. That makes him a tactical decision, not just a scouting one.

  • High line: sweeper keeper on support or attack, high command of area, good distribution.
  • Mid block: goalkeeper on defend, prioritise shot-stopping and handling.
  • Low block: goalkeeper on defend, prioritise reflexes and aerial reach; accept poor distribution.

The tactics guide explains how the defensive line interacts with the keeper's role, and the formations page shows which shapes ask the most of him.

A realistic plan

For a mid-table club with a limited budget:

  1. Buy Araki or Attigah for under £10m and loan them back for a season.
  2. Keep the current senior keeper for two more years.
  3. Promote the youngster when he turns 21, or sell the senior for a fee that covers the original transfer.

That is how the position pays for itself. Goalkeepers are the only role where a £5m signing can become a £40m starter in three seasons without a step up in league quality.
